So the irony of being a mom, at least for me, is that I spent all day taking care of my sweet boy, trying to get things done around the house, but accomplishing very little {besides playing}. And then at the end of this long day, when he is finally asleep in bed, I sit down and look through my entire iphone contents worth of pictures of him rather than get anything done. But during my hour of reminiscing, I found some pictures from before he was here when we were doing nursery projects and this awesome shelf was among those pictures. Please excuse the poor quality iphone pictures... I was probably too lazy/humongous to walk down the stairs to get my real camera!
So on to it...
There was a hanging shelf from pottery barn that I really wanted for C's room, but it was super expensive & they didn't sell it anymore! It didn't really look too hard to make, so we tried & it was super easy.
Here is the Pottery Barn Kids Version- $70 & discontinued. Super cute though!

All you need is one of those already-white cheap shelving boards from home depot, some thick rope (also got at Home Depot, you can buy it buy the foot for really cheap), 2 coat hooks & a drill. The pottery barn version actually used drawer pulls, but I thought it looked too big... and bonus, these were only $3 for the pair!
First I had husband drill corners into all four sides. They must be even so that the shelf will hang evenly!
You will need 2 even pieces of rope and the length depends on how long you want your shelf to hang. I just threaded it through & knotted on one side. Then after we hung it, I adjusted the other side & tied a knot in it while my husband held it in place.
The hooks are hard to see, but they are just the basic shower/towel hooks. These also need to be even so that your shelf will not be lopsided.
I love it & it was seriously the easiest/cheapest DIY project ever! I also tested it out with various heavy objects & it did not slip at all. The straight edge on the back of the shelf lines up with the wall to keep it pretty sturdy.
When my baby is not sleeping, I will snap a picture of the completed shelf for you to see! Make sure when you are doing this project you leave extra room at the ends for you to cut the pieces of rope, as they will fray during the process of putting it together. I also singed one of the ropes, but I would not recommend this because it turned black & really... there is no reason it should fray if it's just hanging there untouched.
Let me know if you do this project, because I'd love to see it!

Oh my WORD!! I need to make this for Hudson's room. I have been looking for a different type of shelf for his room! THANK YOU for sharing! Do they have brown rope too at home depot?
