Ok, I'm back! With a posting of my OWN :-) I am super excited to show you because I am in love with how these turned out!
I originally wanted to make onesies with each month on them for a coworkers baby shower.. but it sounded really time consuming. So I went to etsy to see if they had what I wanted. They did, but it was 75.00 for 12 onesies... umm.. I love babies... and they were super cute, but that is a bit much. Plus, I have "I -can-totally-do-that-myself syndrome" so of course I had to at least try. You also could purchase stickers with these on, but they don't stay so it's pretty much a one time use only thing and I wanted mine to be durable so she can pass them on or keep them for baby #2. {hello run-on sentence}
Ok- getting to the point. I got 12 onesies in varying sizes so they will fit him all the way through.
I made the heat transfer on my silhouette as shown below.
I get all my cool fonts from here. {super easy to download and they have step by step instructions!}
Then, I flipped the words so it would come out correctly when ironed on. {i know you could figure this out, but i'm a visual person. I may go a little picture crazy at times.}
The whole thing will look like this:
Then I laid it all out to make sure I wasn't missing anything. I went with blue & yellow because I always use blue & green when making baby boy stuff... I was trying to change it up, people! But I regret it. I think blue & green would have been cuter!
See all those little holes?? That was the time consuming part. Picking out all of those little pieces with a needle on 12 different logos... maybe it would have been worth the $75!
So here's where my tutorial deviates a bit from the silhouette instructions. See, I tried to iron it on like the directions said, but it did not work for me and I ruined the first one. It says to put a cloth in between your iron and the fabric and let it sit for 60 seconds. When I did this, it didn't peel off at all onto the material but it did melt the plastic part around the design. I don't blame silhouette.... I'm just a terrible direction follower. But this method worked for me x12 so I'm sticking with it!
First, I ironed the onesie. I set the iron there for about 10 seconds to get it nice and warm.
Then I placed the design where I wanted it, smoothing it down so it sticks to the onesie.
This is where I got risky. {i know..this is really as risky as i get. lame.} I put the iron right onto the plastic design and pressed down hard for about 2-3 seconds, moving it around so I covered the whole design. When you're ironing, make sure to leave a spot at the top that you don't go over because it will be really hot to the touch when you try to pull it up. My iron doesn't have a temp on it, but it was on the "cotton" setting, no steam!
You'll know it's adhered when it gets bubbly like shown in this picture {the right side shows it best}. Peel it up quickly while it's still hot. If it cools down, you can just run the iron over it again to warm it up.
After I was done with them all, I ran the iron over the top of them on a low setting for a while just to make sure they will stay! It's probably not necessary, but I want them to be durable.. after all, they are for a BOY.
And 12 onesies later, here they are!
I am truly in love with them! I want to keep them for myself and I'm not even pregnant yet! The quality looks great, too. They definitely do not look homemade.
And here they are all rolled up in their gift box ready for wearing.
I'm just in love! {did i say that already??} I am thinking about making some of these to sell on etsy... what do you think? Would anyone buy them? And if so, would they rather buy the iron ons to make themselves? Or the whole set of onesies? They are time consuming, but they turn out so great! And will make a great shower gift! Wouldn't they be so cute in girly colors?
Anyway, If you made it this far, thanks for sticking with me on the lengthiest post in the history of ji@H.
I will be linking up to these amazing parties this weekend:

That is SO adorable! And such a unique gift! Maybe for Etsy - just the decals. Not everyone can make those, but anyone could iron them on. ANd it would make it cheaper. You could always offer the option of making them. Either way, a listing on Etsy is cheap, so you could try both!

These are AWESOME! All of my 'mom' friends have some variation on this idea, but all were store bought.
ReplyDeleteYour posts always make me want to buy the designer/printer thing...although I have enough hobbies already!

Great post. I feel like I won't be like the cool kids until I own a silhouette. As for etsy I'd sell the decals only because the size of the onesie at a certain age can vary from baby to baby. Loving your blog . .

I love these they are adorable I did something similar for my little one and I take his picture every month with his special onsie on, but i didn't have a silhouette when I first started making them so they are not as cute. The next baby I will do something cuter. We learn i guess right
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love these!! I have several friends who are having babies this fall and these would make PERFECT gifts!! And I would be interested in buying the iron ons!! Visiting from Amanda's Weekend Bloggy party!
ReplyDeleteI have had my Silhouette for about six months and have never tried the iron on fabric yet. You have inspired me to order some of the special fabric and try some projects of my own. Thanks for the inspiration. Those are adorable.
ReplyDeleteI am stopping by from the Boost my blog linky party.
I was totally going to knock these off myself for my sister in laws baby. I love that you already did it...and rocked it! :) Nice work.
ReplyDeleteOh how i wish I had a silhouette. I really want to make these! I want someone to make them for my baby shower...and yes they would totally be cute in girl colors.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea for a gift! I have a Silhouette too but never tried this. Thanks for sharing, visiting from Serenity Now
ReplyDeleteThat is just so fun. I love it for a baby gift. Great tutorial.
ReplyDeleteI shared it on my TT&J fb page and stumbled it :)

I love this! and now I'm really drooling over a silhouette
ReplyDeletethose are such an adorable idea, altho I have no idea what a Silhouette machine is (I've heard of it, I just don't know what it does). If you didn't care for the blue and yellow (i like it, tho) blue and orange are a set of complements that would look lovely together. I tired of blue, blue, blue, some green that everyone bought for my baby boys and used a TON of orange and purple, too. All of those secondary colors are perfect for boys, IMO!
ReplyDeleteOh those are cute! Need to share with my girlfriend who was due yesterday and still hasn't had the baby.

Love these! Freaking adorable and I have to share on my FB Page!! I have a lil one due in July and these would be perfect for taking some monthly shots!! Love it!
ReplyDeleteVery cute! This set would make a great baby shower gift and it would be show stopper!
ReplyDeletemarian @ perfectchancememories.com
okay these are so adorable!! My only fear would be that they wouldn't fit if the baby was smaller or larger than other babies. But for the monthly picture you could squeeze them in if they were too big, haha. :) I wonder if you could offer a onesie of the month club and send them but that would be a lot of work :P

ReplyDeleteSuch a cute idea!!
ReplyDeleteThose are fabulous! Reason #567 why I need a silhouette machine - making iron ons for onesies.

THAT IS AWESOME... I NEED to do this before my little one comes in 5 weeks. Super cute idea, thanks for linking too. winks-jen
ReplyDeleteYes!! I'd buy them or just the iron-ons. I've been looking at making some but yours are so cute, why not just go that route. Email me if you do decide to make the iron ons to sell.

Love the colors and the patterns, too cute!
ReplyDeleteHi!
ReplyDeleteI'm your newest follower from the Boost your Blog hop. These are too cute! I think they would sell well on Etsy. Look forward to future posts!

The cutest thing ever! What a fantastic gift, your design and packaging are great! I agree with CindeeQ, you should consider marketing these. Totally adorable.
ReplyDeleteVERY CUTE! I just may be sending you an invite to my baby shower! ;) Can't wait to read your ABC's! What part of Minnesota are you in?! Maybe you have it in your blog somewhere and I just haven't gotten there yet. . .
ReplyDeleteAdorable!! I'll be featuring you as a Friday Fav this week at naptimecrafters.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteThis is such a great idea and would make the perfect gift. I'd love for you to submit this to the M&T Spotlight at http://www.makeandtakes.com/spotlight
ReplyDeleteOk, when I first saw this I thought the picture was of a baby shower garland, then I saw it was a tutorial for the onesies and I realized, HELLO, my s-i-l is having baby #2 and this would make a great gift AND a garland for her shower that she could use afterwards, so that is what I will do. I can thread a pretty ribbon or a clothes line up with them. Maybe some bibs, too. Awesome!
ReplyDeleteYou are on to something here!! I'd totally buy these decals!
ReplyDeleteWhat a chariming gift - so thoughtful.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love this. I just attempted making some for my friend and this may be a silly question but how do you print color on the Silhouette?
ReplyDeleteLove your onesies. I am gonna be a grandm. soon so love all the baby ideas. I would offer both but as far as jus the iron ons go, babies are diff. sizes so a month might have to be skipped due to size so i wuld go decals. JMO. :)
ReplyDeleteSO cute! I recently made a shirt for my son but the design started cracking after he had worn it for a day. What heat transfer paper did you use? Is it durable?
ReplyDeleteshellyvits at hotmail dot com
Very cute! Unfortunately our son is already wearing 18m clothes when he just turned 9m so something like that wouldn't work for us unless we bought the decals & waited to know his size to iron them on. (And who would want to wait!)
ReplyDeleteI would love to buy the decals before our due date in July. We're having a girl, let me know if you decide to sell them
ReplyDeleteshannon1254@comcast.net
Thanks for sharing this with my readers today. :) It was a very sweet project!
ReplyDeleteI'm planning on making these this month for my brothers baby. Did you have to buy packs of onezies or do they sell them individually?
ReplyDeleteI have looked at Target but all I found were packs. Any advice would be great! SO DANG CUTE!
YESSSS I would looove to have these! Did you make an esty site??!!!
ReplyDeleteLove your crafts. Very creative. Do you have a twitter account?
ReplyDeletelove. would so buy the iron ons if u sold them :)
ReplyDeleteSorry, I'm new to crafty stuff- is a silhouette like a cricut?
ReplyDeleteDid you buy the silhouette vinyl?
ReplyDeleteI want to make some of these on my silhouette...did you just use the silhouettes vinyl? About how many sheets does it take?
ReplyDeleteThank you so much...where did you find the "colored" heat transfer paper?
ReplyDeleteHi there! I love these! Where did you find the circle frame? Is it in the silhouette store?
ReplyDeleteYes it's in the store! Although I bought it over 2 years ago, so I am sure they have a bigger selection now! This specific one is shown in the shop w/3 different versions of it (depending on which parts you peel) but when you print it, you just get 1 if that makes sense.
