Beaded Flower Headband

I'm not the best at accessorizing. Don't get me wrong, I love accessories! But I always forget to put them on in the rush of getting ready in the morning! But over at Little Miss Momma they are celebrating headband week and I was inspired to try and make my own accessories. That way if I forget to wear it I don't feel so bad for spending $9.00 on a headband! :)

First, I made the band part by tying two pieces of fine beading wire. I am not a beader, so I am not sure if this is the best kind of wire to use for this, but it worked well for me and is very strong! I started out with 10 beads on each end and then strung them in opposite directions through a straight bead. After a couple of those, I started with the bigger circles.  I used 12 beads on each string for the circle.

I did this until it was about half way around my head.
Then I added on two hair ties to make it stretchy. (You could probably just use stretchy string, but I kept envisioning me walking through the mall and all of a sudden it breaks and a thousand beads pour from the top of my head... embarrassing!)

If you like the look of the circles you could make it longer and it would look more like the photo, but I wanted it to stretch out so they were more rectangular shaped.

I tied these to each end and had the band for the headband:

(I kind of liked this look without any embellishments, but I really wanted to try out a flower! I might make another plain one to have also since it's so easy!)

I made the flower by taking a small circle of felt and gluing ribbon around the edges. I originally had the idea in my mind to use satin ribbon, but turns out I didn't have any!

I glued every couple of centimeters, folding the ribbon over to make it around the curves. I also strung about an inch worth of beads and hot glued them to the middle to cover up the seams. (I'd probably use less beads for the middle next time, but I already started gluing before I realized that. You can learn from my mistakes:)Here's the final flower:

I put the flower on the headband and glued another small felt circle to the opposite side to connect it to the band and here is the final product:

(Sorry I don't have any cute kids to model for me!)
This project took under 45 minutes (including many pauses for pictures!) and the cost for me was FREE because I already had everything. But if you didn't, it would still be very cheap:
beads- 1.50 (1/2 off this week at hob lob so they'd be even cheaper! and I only used 1/2 a container)
wire - $3 at hob lob
Hairties - somewhere in the house!
ribbon - 2.99 at hob lob (40% off this week)
And since you don't use much of this stuff, it probably only costs about a dollar!
There you have it! Super easy, super cheap and super cute! Thanks for the inspiration Little Miss Momma!  Now if I can only remember to accessorize!

  3. Thanks for the idea! It really would look alot cuter with two colors.. I might have to try that! :) As I was taking the pictures I thought, "This would look so much better if I had blonde hair!" But I guess changing the flower color would be easier than changing my hair color!!
